There are definite signs that your car needs a new engine that cannot be ignored, so you will be able to tell when the time has come to replace the original engine. Speed Auto Repair can help you determine whether the engine can be rebuilt or needs to be replaced. Either way, we are the auto service shop you can rely on to do the job right the first time. Let’s talk about definitive signs that point to severe engine damage.
Constant Overheating
Your automobile should always have an engine temperature that is under 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If the engine overheats constantly, you may have a blown head gasket, a cracked exhaust manifold, a cracked engine block, or a problem with the cooling system. In all cases with the exception of the engine block, the engine might be able to be repaired. In the case of a cracked engine block, you will have to replace the engine.
Excess Exhaust Smoke
Another sign that your engine is on its last leg is if you see excessive exhaust smoke flowing out of the tailpipe. This signals a fluid leak in the engine that is large enough to create the exhaust smoke. In the case of black exhaust, your engine is leaking diesel fuel or gasoline. If the exhaust is blue or gray, you have a serious oil leak most likely from a cracked engine gasket. Finally, if the exhaust smoke is white, the engine is hemorrhaging coolant.
Loud Engine Knocking
Loud engine knocking is also an indication that your engine needs to be replaced. Specifically, if the pistons are banging against the cylinder walls, they will damage the cylinders. In this case, we may be able to replace the cylinder block to resolve the problem. The issue lies with the rods and rod bearings, however. They will need to be replaced, as well.
Metal in the Motor Oil
One instance where your engine must be replaced and cannot be rebuilt is if there is metal in the motor oil. This is a sign of serious engine damage. The parts that make up your engine are disintegrating into the motor oil. Unfortunately, as the oil circulates through the engine with the metal shavings and it, it will only damage the engine further.
Permanent Power Loss
Finally, there will come a time when your engine suffers from permanent power loss. This power loss is due to the engine age and nothing else. Consequently, there isn’t a repair or rebuild that will resolve the problem. Rather, the engine will need to be replaced.
