Overall Position Goals:

    • Interface with technical staff and maintain proper communications to ensure proper handling of each vehicle and client.

    • Prepares repair invoices using established standards.
    • Review all repairs and charges with clients on delivery.

Certified Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs complex main engine, engine ignition, fuel system, and engine emission control system diagnosis and repair, to include repair of diesel, gas, and alternative fuel system configurations.
  2. Performs complex diagnosis and repair of automatic, standard, and electronic transmission mechanical and control systems, to include standard transmission clutch operating systems, transaxle and transfer case systems, and all phases of final drive operation.
  3. Performs complex diagnosis and repair of various types of supension, steering, power assist, and alignment systems; diagnoses and repairs various types of brake systems, to include hydraulic systems, disc and drum brake applications, air brake systems, and anti-lock brake systems operation.
  4. Performs complex general electrical and electronic system diagnosis and repair, to include starting and charging systems, electrical wiring systems, gauges and warning systems, and accessory systems; diagnoses and repairs ventilation systems, heat and air conditioning systems, refrigerant recovery, and mechanical systems.
  5. Performs all phases of maintenance required for fleet vehicles operation.
  6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure Certified as Master Automotive Technician by Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent; Certified in areas required by City, State, and/or Federal Agencies (i.e., Freon Recovery/Emission Inspection).
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to use automotive diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain automotive vehicles and various types of equipment, along with associated sub-systems.
  • Ability to test drive all vehicles repaired.
  • Ability to perform complex automotive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

General Technician:

  • Perform maintenance and repair on customer vehicles.
  • Identify problems with vehicles using the diagnostic equipment.
  • Explain automotive repairs and issues and provide great customer service.
  • Plan repair procedures using charts manuals and experience.
  • Test the functionality of parts and systems
  • Perform basic auto care and maintenance tasks such as oil changes, fluid level checks, and tire rotation.
  • Repair and replace brake pads, wheel bearings, sensors and other parts.
  • Perform routine maintenance and general mechanic work on vehicles.
  • Prepared to get additional certification as needed.
  • Willingness to learn with hands-on training.
  • Help keep repair shop clean and organized.
  • Keep a professional appearance.

General Technician Requirements:

  • Automotive and engine repair experience or auto mechanic training required.
  • ASE certifications required.
  • Hold a valid driver license.
  • Graduated from an associate degree program in auto maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and provide friendly customer service.
  • Must read, interpret and transcribe data in order to maintain accurate records.
  • Perform routine maintenance and other tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • May lift objects that weigh as much as 50 lbs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience as a lube technician, or prepared to do on-the-job training.
  • Understanding of automotive air-conditioning systems.
  • Ability to use the diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience with heavy equipment and as a diesel mechanic, diesel engine knowledge, or prepared to do on-the-job training.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.

Exhaust Emissions Inspector – Inspects and tests motor vehicle emission control systems, using handtools and computerized testing equipment:

  • Attaches test circuit leads to vehicle ignition system and inserts exhaust probe in tail pipe.
  • Starts and accelerates engine to specified speed.
  • Observes dials and meters of testing equipment to determine exhaust emission content and records readings on chart.
  • Compares computer printout to exhaust emissions chart to detect variations.
  • Examines emission control systems to determine cause of faulty operation.
  • Adjusts and replaces defective parts, using handtools.
  • Records incidence of recurring defects and consults with department heads or plant engineers to initiate corrective measures.
