The water pump is the cooling system part that moves the coolant throughout the engine. This makes certain that every nook and cranny of the engine is cooled off to prevent overheating. Ideally, the engine’s temperature should never rise above 220 degrees Fahrenheit. It can do this easily if the water pump has died or is malfunctioning.
Corrosion
One of the first signs that the water pump is having problems is corrosion on the pump. This corrosion means that the water pump has a slow coolant leak. Consequently, you may not realize that your car’s water pump is leaking because there aren’t any coolant spots on the garage floor. This makes it easy for the coolant to continue to eat away at the pump’s metal.
Leaking
Once the coolant has gorged itself on the metal, you will see spots on the garage floor. In fact, you may have an entire puddle of coolant that has leaked out of the water pump. This makes driving your vehicle difficult because the engine will rise above that 220-degree maximum. Even if you add coolant to the engine, it will leak out of the hole in the water pump.
Poor Circulation
As we mentioned in the introduction to this post, the water pump pushes the coolant through the engine. Unfortunately, a water pump can malfunction and have problems with the coolant circulation. This can also create a temperature issue. If you suspect there is a problem with the circulation of the coolant to the engine, stop by our shop so we can test it.
Growling
Sometimes, the water pump growls when it is wearing out. This may also sound as if the water pump is grinding. The water plant is attached to the accessory belt to give it power. If there’s a problem with the belt, you may hear whining in the engine. It could be that there’s nothing wrong with the water pump. Rather, the accessory belt is the problem. Either way, we can fix it.
Overheating
Finally, you already know this but it bears repeating. If your water pump is not operating as it should be, your engine is going to overheat. Unfortunately, this could be every time that you drive your automobile. If you continue to operate the vehicle when the engine is too hot, you could cause expensive and unnecessary engine damage, such as a cracked head gasket.
Avoid this by calling us right away if you believe you need a new water pump in your automobile. We would be happy to set up a service appointment that works well with your schedule.
